The Institute of Linear Research: UK
Walking the Line in Whitstable. This is first time The Institute of Linear Research, @line_to_venice, has been walked in the UK, as part of an MA Cities unit exploring a range of creative research practices into the built environment that will shape our thesis research questions.
The Institute for Linear Research (ILR) is an open platform for investigating contemporary landscapes by walking along straight lines, uncovering remoteness of all kinds and carefully directing our attention towards spaces as they are. The ILR’s efforts focus mainly on the particular geography defined by a specific arbitrary straight line traced around the globe (THE LINE). Anyone who walks THE LINE for research purposes becomes a member of the Institute.
The collected research outcomes are published in book format as a series under The Infinite Publication Series imprint. The fourth volume in this series will be in collaboration with MA Cities.
The ILR was founded in 2018 by Matilde Igual Capdevila and Luis Hilti and presented at Venice Architecture Biennale that same year. THE LINE has so far been walked in Liechtenstein; Vorarlberg (Austria); Schaffhausen, Thurgau, Apenzell and St Gallen (Switzerland); Venice (Italy) and Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa (USA). The project was presented in Delft, Tirana, Ljubljana, Vaduz, Luzern, València, Berlin, Chicago and Minneapolis.
